Becoming honest and admitting that we have a problem is just the first step in getting help for a porn or sex addiction. 

Overcoming a problem, however, requires several elements of attention in order to bring about a desired change. Many people dream about being free one day, but it is only those who are intentional about changing who overcome. Until we do something practical to fulfill our dreams, they are only daydreams. 

Following are 4 ways to get intentional about overcoming a porn or sex addiction.

1.  Get A Plan

Most of us would never consider starting a business without developing a plan for success.  We would envision what we want to accomplish, set goals, develop a strategy, and schedule tasks to accomplish our desired objectives. 

The more specific we become in our planning, the more likely we will fulfill our desires. If you aim at nothing you will most likely hit it.

Planning does not ensure that we will accomplish everything we have set out to do, but without planning we will probably not set out to do anything. 

If you don’t plan, you are planning to fail. In developing a successful plan to overcome a sexual addiction, we should consider the following characteristics of a proper plan:

We made choices to get into a porn or sex addiction, and we must make choices to pursue a healthy, whole life of freedom.

It took years developing the roots of compulsive sexual behavior.  It took time to get to where you are, it will take time to get from where you are into freedom and wellbeing.

Reaching our destination is determined by our determination.

I can’t tell you how many times I have seen amazing come backs in sporting events, business disasters, and personal life experiences. For most, their comeback was founded in their ability to stay positive, even in the midst of seemingly insurmountable odds. 

Our attitude determines our altitude. In our quest to overcome compulsive sexual problems, it is crucial to celebrate the positive perspectives along the way. Remaining positive requires 2 distinct focal points of celebration:

   1. Celebrating our successes

Even small increments of change contribute to our success at overcoming sexual addiction. 

   2. Celebrating our blessings

Being thankful for even the small blessings leads to awareness and potential fulfillment of greater blessing in our life. 

Thankfulness prepares the way for breakthrough. While these 4 tips are helpful in overcoming porn and sex addiction, it is important to realize that we still need help along the way. 

We can’t do this alone, but with a proper plan, a strategic program, patience in the process, and staying positive, we can overcome compulsive sexual problems, and live in wholeness and wellness.
