Finding Freedom from Porn Addiction: 4 Steps You Need To Take

1. Create an Action Plan

The first step in getting help from a porn addiction is creating an action plan for recovery.
Failing to plan means you’re planning to fail.
If you look throughout history, no great battle was ever won without a plan. If you really want to conquer the summit of porn addiction you need a plan.

If you don’t have a plan, make it a plan to create one today!

2. Be Honest

Being honest might be the scariest step in our recovery from addiction, but it is one of the most important steps in our recovery.
At the core of an addiction to pornography is shame and secrecy.
They are the bloodline to addiction. Honesty is the only way out of the valley of secrecy and isolation.
Quitting  porn and staying free requires us to be honest. First with ourselves, then with God and others.

Ask yourself, who can you be honest with today?

3. Join a Support Group

In your fight to conquer the summit of porn addiction you need support from others. Isolation and shame are at the core of your struggle.
Joining a support group will expose the illusion that you’re the only one struggling.
You may have got here on your own, but you can’t get free on your own.
You need all the help you can get and since you cannot afford to make your wife your accountability partner, joining a support group is a great tool to help cultivate intimacy through community with others that are on the same journey of recovery as you.
Make it part of your plan to join a support group today!

4. Create Healthy Replacement Behaviors

Creating healthy replacement behaviors is a key to successful recovery.
If you know you get tempted or act out a certain time of the day, be intentional about creating healthy behaviors for that time of day.
If you’re tempted at night, leave your computer, tablet, and phone outside your bedroom and go for a run, journal, pray, or call a friend. Don’t just sit around looking for something to do.
Be intentional with what you do with your time, if you're not, chances are you’ll find yourself in front of the screen again saying “this is my last time.. I promise”.
Yeah, we all know that “promise”.
If you’re going to have true freedom that lasts, then you can’t rely on white knuckling it all the time.
Instead of making a “promise” to not look at porn, make a promise to journal instead. Saying NO to porn is not enough. You need a YES to a healthy behavior.

Start being intentional today by creating a list of reasonable healthy behaviors to do instead!
